Mowing your lawn high (3 inches) will offer the best protection against hot dry weather. Taller grass also shades the soil which helps prevent weeds from germinating.

We have had an unusually wet spring and early summer. This has kept most drought stress problems to a minimum. Over all turf quality has been very good so far. This has also prevented any grub damage from becoming noticeable.

As the weather becomes hotter and drier, you can expect to see more of the following problems - remember, when in doubt, call us for a free inspection and diagnosis:

1) Grub and other insect damage - The damage caused by grubs and other insects isn't usually noticeable on well watered lawns. However, as the weather becomes hotter and drier, damage may become much more noticeable. Call us if you notice persistent discolored patches in your lawn. When grubs are present, these patches can be easily peeled back because the grubs have sheared off the roots. You'll notice the grubs lying in the soil surface. We offer a very effective treatment for the control of grubs and other damaging insects.

2) Diseases - With all the recent moisture, we're starting to see some disease problems. The most common is "Leaf Spot" which gives the lawn a yellow look, even with regular watering. Close inspection will reveal small brown spots on the leaf blade, then a general yellowing of the entire blade. Another common disease is "Dollar Spot," which forms small yellow patches 2 to 4 inches in diameter. 3) Weeds - ** NOTICE** Weeds cannot be prevented! We can only treat for them when they become visible. If you notice weeds in your lawn between regular treatments, call us for a free service call. Weeds are opportunistic - they like to grow where the lawn is weak. As the weather becomes hotter and drier, you can expect to see more weeds trying to move in! They will also become more noticeable as they start to frow faster than the lawn. Mow high ( 3 inches) and water regularly to help keep weeds from germinating.
